Royal Palace of Phnom Penh

This 400 x 400-meter wide area is home to the present king of Cambodia, his majesty King Norodom Sihamoni. In comparison with the loud streets of Phnom Penh, the gardens around the throne hall and the other buildings are quiet and peaceful. You can watch the thrown hall from outside, but the 20 steps up prevent a glimpse for wheelchair users. They can visit the little exhibition of dresses and jewelry of the royal family instead next door. The stupas in the Temple of the Emerald Buddha host the ashes of the former kings. Over one high step, you can get on the 600 m long round walk gallery, which shows in one huge picture made by 40 painters “Ramakien”, the famous story about the halfgod Rama and his victory over the level.

In the former elephant stalls, today shops and exhibition rooms can be found. All elephants died during the Pol-Pot Era (1975-1979). While the royal family was locked into the palace, all the staff was deported and so the elephants starved of hunger.
